Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Quito is the capital city of Ecuador and is the country’s second largest city with 1.6 million people. The population is 65% mestizo (mixed Amerindian and white), 25% Amerindian, 7%, European of Spanish extraction and 3% other (mainly of African origin). With a moribund economy Quito remains largely unaffected by recent movements of people due to globalization. Carlos, my guide, and I started in the main city square and set about trying to get some photographs. After an hour we were only able to convince 3 people to participate – clearly this was not going to work. The locals were very suspicious or simply not interested. We packed up and headed over to the main University where I hoped a younger group of people might be more receptive to the project. My intuition proved correct and within four or five hours we had our faces. Almost all the students were from Quito or other parts of Ecuador and included people of indigenous, Spanish and African ancestry. The resulting face is for me typically Andean and is very similar to the face of Lima, which is what one would expect as the cities have a similar history and ethnic composition.
