Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city with a population of 3.7 million. The city was settled in the 3rd Century BC by Celtic tribes and was occupied by the Romans shortly after. Subsequent attacks and occupations by Greeks, Arabs, Persians, Crusaders and Seljuk Turks all left their mark on the city’s ethnic makeup. Turkey was declared a republic in 1923 and Ankara replaced Istanbul as the capital of the new country. The population is about 90% Turkish with about 10% of the population of Kurdish origin. Turkish is the offical language. Today the city continues to draw migrants from the rest of the country as Turkey continues to urbanize and modernize. Ankara was the second city I attempted to get people to participate in the Face of Tomorrow. I still thought I would have to give people something for their time but this time I refined the process and gave away cans of coke and fruit juice instead of money. Memet, my guide, and I hit the local supermarket and bought up about 150 cans, which we wheeled down to Gençlik (Youth) Park one Saturday morning. Off-duty soldiers and local merchants made up the bulk of those photographed. Again we could get no women to take part. The composite face is strikingly similar to Istanbul, some 400 kilometres away, attesting to the integration that has taken place in the country over the past thousand years.
