Founded by the Spanish in 1535, Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru and has a metropolitan population of 8.3 million. The ethnic composition of Peru is 45% Amerindian, 37% mestizo (mixed Amerindian and white), 15% white and 3% other (African, Japanese, Chinese) and Lima’s makeup would run along these lines. Today the city draws migrants from all over Peru but its economy is not enough of a magnet to attract people from outside the country. Jiron de la Union is the main pedestrian street in downtown Lima and is adjacent to the city’s main square. It represents people from all walks of life – shopkeepers, beggars, businessmen – and can be said to be a true reflection of the city. It took a while to get the photos, but the locals proved a lot more accommodating than the inhabitants of Quito. In the end the composite faces are strikingly similar to those from Quito – perhaps a little bit more European looking, which is to be expected as people with Spanish ancestry make up a larger percentage of the population in Peru than in Ecuador.
