Pamplona is the capital of the Spanish region of Navarra and is probably most famous internationally for its running of the bulls which takes place in July as part of its San Fermin festivities. Navarra has a sizeable Basque populaton and the Basque name for the city is Irun, although the region itself is not part of the Basque country. The majority of the population of 170,000 is white of Mediterranean and Nordic origin. Spanish (Castillian) and Basque are the official languages. Apart from the influx of tourists every year for San Fermin, the city like most small towns, has not been greatly affected by the movements of people due to globalization. After navigating our way past the very strict security with the help of the head of media relations I set myself up in a beautiful new light-filled building in the communications faculty. The students were very friendly and curious and the shoot went very quickly. Again like in Hong Kong they understood the concept and were keen to give their email addresses so I could send them the results. The University of Navarra draws students from all over Europe and the wider world and the resulting composite faces are perhaps more Spanish or European than typically Basque.
