Santiago is the capital and largest city in Chile and with 5.3 million people is home to about one third of the country’s population. The city was founded by the Spanish in the mid 16th Century and became capital of the newly independent country in 1818. The population is largely white of Spanish extraction or white-Amerindian, with a small minority consisting of Amerindians (3%), others (2%). Spanish is the official language. The 1990s and 2000s have seen new growth and opportunities as years of military dictatorship, which saw an exodus of several hundred thousand Chileños, came to an end. Santiago continues to attract migrants from the rest of the country but it otherwise remains detached from the great global movements of people. While out scouting for a location I came across a group of students conducting a taste test for a new soft drink. They obviously already had the necessary skills to approach people so I asked them to help. Because their work started at 10 we had to start at 7 which meant we got a great cross section of people on their way to work. Los Leones is a solidly middle class area with many shopping centers as well as Chile’s “ World Trade Center.” The people I photographed were all Chile ñ os with the exception of two Brazilians. The composite faces are similar to Buenos Aires, which is what one would expect, but less arrogant looking, which only confirms South Americans’ own notions of their dispositions.
